The Chinook Indian Nation & Columbia Land Trust En

The Chinook Indian Nation & Columbia Land Trust Entered into an Historic Agreement on Sunday at the Barbey Maritime Center in Astoria. This partnership sets up a co-stewardship model, where both groups will work together to care for the land in traditional Chinook territory. It not only strengthens bonds but also opens the door to returning the land to its original caretakers. “This relationship creates access to land,” said Rachel Cushman, Secretary and Treasurer of the Chinook Indian Nation. “It’s a step towards getting Indigenous lands back to Indigenous people.” This agreement marks the beginning of a beautiful and collaborative journey focused on cultural knowledge and land stewardship.

US Ambassador Nyhus presents a special blanket to Dominica’s President Sylvanie Burton, designed by Chinook Chairman Tony Johnson and Shirod Younker (Coquille-Coos-Umpqua)
Ambassador Roger F. Nyhus, a proud member of the Chinook Indian Nation, gifted President Burton with treasures from his home state of Washington and a meaningful present from his tribe. During his visit to Dominica, Ambassador Nyhus presented President Burton with two glass baby candleholders from Seattle, reflecting the colors of the tribe and the environment. Additionally, she received a beautiful Native American blanket designed by Chinook Indian Nation Chair Tony Johnson, a gift from the tribe.
While presenting the gifts, Ambassador Nyhus shared, “May our canoes glide effortlessly across the seas, and may our peoples join together, learn from each other, and chart successful paths forward as friends.”

The Gathering, our second annual celebration of Native American Heritage Month, is happening this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Cannon Beach. Last year, it was a whirlwind of Native beauty, artistic expression, community-making/healing, and just a mighty ancient canoe-load of shimmering Indigenous goodness. Here’s the details on all the events (check out Raye Zaragoza’s music if you’re not familiar with her and then come give me a fist-bump before your heart is blown open at her free concert!). Dittmer is an Indigenous multi-media artist from the Ho-Chunk Nation. She draws inspiration from both the Pacific temperate rainforest and her people’s woodland traditions.

This beautiful design is on all of this year’s powwow merch, and the original art truly showcases the vibrant rich colors of Dittmer’s vision.
