This morning, Leonard Peltier was released from over 49 years of wrongful incarceration. Peltier is an enrolled citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians and will reside on his Tribal homelands in North Dakota.

Upon Peltier’s request, NDN Collective is bringing him home to the Turtle Mountain community. NDN Collective and partners built upon 50 years of organizing and advocacy that secured Peltier’s release.

“Today I am finally free! They may have imprisoned me but they never took my spirit!” said Leonard Peltier. “Thank you to all my supporters throughout the world who fought for my freedom. I am finally going home. I look forward to seeing my friends, my family, and my community. It’s a good day today.”

“Leonard Peltier is free! He never gave up fighting for his freedom so we never gave up fighting for him. Today our elder Leonard Peltier walks into the open arms of his people,” said Nick Tilsen, NDN Collective Founder and CEO. “Peltier’s liberation is invaluable in and of itself – yet just as his wrongful incarceration represented the oppression of Indigenous Peoples everywhere, his release today is a symbol of our collective power and inherent freedom.”

“This moment would not be happening without Secretary Deb Haaland and President Biden responding to the calls for Peltier’s release that have echoed through generations of grassroots organizing,” said Holly Cook Macarro, Government Affairs for NDN Collective. “Today is a testament to the many voices who fought tirelessly for Peltier’s freedom and justice.”

Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier was released from a Florida prison Tuesday morning after spending nearly 50 years behind bars.

For decades, Peltier, who is 80 years old, has maintained his innocence over the 1975 killing of two FBI agents in a shootout on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Last month President Joseph Biden commuted Peltier’s life sentence to serve the remainder of his time under house arrest.

This Presidents’ Day, Let’s Talk About Native Leadership.

From Tribal Nations to federal offices, Native representation in leadership is not just important, it’s essential.

Why does Native representation matter? Because decisions about land, sovereignty, healthcare, and education must include Indigenous voices.

Despite having over 570 federally recognized Tribes, Native Americans remain vastly underrepresented in government at every level. That is why having Native leaders like Sharice Davids, Deb Haaland, and so many others, is a milestone for progress.

In fact, in 2024, at least 253 Native candidates ran for office, with 166 securing victories! Even more exciting, 115 of these leaders are first-time officeholders, bringing new perspectives and invaluable lived experiences to the table. (Data from @advancenativepl & @indiancountrytoday)

This Presidents’ Day, let’s celebrate the leaders who fight for Native communities and continue advocating for a future where Indigenous voices are heard, respected, and empowered.

OIEA welcomes Native youth, 2nd through 8th grades, to participate in this year’s OIEA Youth Conference. This year’s OIEA Youth Conference theme is Native Games and Movement.

Youth must come with a chaperone, and chaperones must stay at the conference with their youth or group of youth.

A parent or legal guardian must complete the form as it requires consents.
