Born in Clatskanie, Oregon in 1928, Elmer Wilson’s roots were firmly planted in the region. He grew up near Astoria, Oregon, at the base of Saddle Mountain. Elmer’s dedication to his community was evident through his remarkable service on the Chinook Indian Nation Tribal Council for over 35 years. His unwavering commitment has left a lasting impact on the tribe and its future generations.

We are excited to announce the second annual offering of our Tribal Watershed Internship program as part of our co-stewardship agreement with the @everydaychinook.

Unfortunately, conservation often does not provide opportunities for career training to tribal youth or young adults that would like to gain experience in a conservation workforce. Our program provides vital “on-the-ground” experience for young adults in the tribal community by combining field experience, grant writing training, partnership meetings and community outreach to develop well-rounded workforce skills and relationships. In addition, we as an organization rely on our interns to teach us as well, things like traditional methods of conservation and research, tribal community priorities and exciting ways to engage BIPOC youth in our work and leadership.

ALL THAT SAID, we need your help to run this program. We are searching for a safe and sensitive housing opportunity for our summer intern. Do you have an ADU or other space that might work well? We want to talk!

What’s in it for you?

- A small stipend to cover general costs;
- The ability to be a vital part of our growing tribal internship program;

For the past two decades, our region in Washington and Oregon has suffered the loss of millions of dollars in funding due to the absence of official recognition for the Chinook Nation. The impact of this denial extends far beyond our tribe alone.
Federal recognition for the Chinook Nation will unlock vital resources to strengthen our local economy. It will sustain hospitals, support infrastructure development, provide housing and job opportunities, and enhance the preservation of our natural resources.

Join Us in Celebrating Earth Day with an ecologically focused geocaching adventure in Seaside!

On April 20th and 21st, the Necanicum Watershed Council (NWC) is partnering with Earth Day Oregon and our awesome slate of 2024 business partners, to host the “Earth Day Oregon Seaside Adventure”, a fun, family-friendly walking and exploration event in Seaside. We invite everyone to join us in exploring the urban center of our watershed, Seaside, through an outdoor scavenger hunt to help us celebrate Earth Day in our watershed.

The scavenger event is free for community members and visitors to participate. Make sure to stop by the NWC table on Broadway next to the Carousel Mall to learn more about our organization and Earth Day Oregon and to enter our raffle for great locally sourced goodies!

Renowned boat builder Joseph “Josie” George, a member of the Chinook Nation, was born in 1871 and passed away in 1945. Spending his entire life in Bay Center, Josie was the son of George and Margaret Skamock (Squamaup). While the exact number of boats he constructed remains unknown, they were highly sought after by local fishermen and oystermen. Owning a “Joseph George” boat was considered a prestigious symbol of distinction in any waters.

The Lower Columbia River was a highway, and Chinookan people controlled it. Chinookan people are expert canoe builders and have navigated their river highway in these boats for thousands of years.

We have an unbroken canoe culture. Elders that we have known in our lifetimes were raised in, and with, their canoes. They used them to fish, run trap lines, and to travel on our rivers and bays. Knowledge gained from them has allowed us to continue to build and use canoes in our community.

Today, several Chinook families, and the Nation itself, own canoes. Those canoes have continued their important lives in our community and are used for travel, fishing and hunting, and ceremony.

We remain tied to the waters of our ancestors. We are proud of the knowledge we have inherited, and many families today continue to work and make their livings from these waters daily.

Join us at the Museum on April 20th at 2 pm, for our annual meeting. We will visit, welcome new board members, and update members on current happenings.

Jon D. Daehnke, an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and author of the book “Chinook Resilience, Chinook Interventions: History, Heritage, and Collaborations on the Columbia River,” will also give a talk on his past and current work with the Chinook Indian Nation.

Over roughly twenty years, Jon Daehnke has conducted archaeological, ethnographic, and heritage-related work along the Lower Columbia River, nearly all of it completed in consultation and collaboration with the Chinook Indian Nation. This has included research on the effects that volcanic eruptions have had on the Columbia River and the impact of that on Chinookan towns, the centrality of canoes in Chinookan culture, public interpretation of Columbia River history, and Chinook efforts to tell their own stories in their own homelands, the revitalization of Chinookan art, and the Chinook Indian Nation’s continuing efforts to be officially recognized by the federal government of the United States. In this talk, he explores what he has observed, learned, and most importantly, been taught, over the roughly two decades that he has worked in partnership with the Chinook Indian Nation. Finally, he’ll touch on the importance of collaborative research, especially in research fields that have a history of unilateral and proprietary behavior.

CPHM is open Wednesday - Saturday, from 10 am - 4 pm.
Admission is FREE, thanks to the Port of Ilwaco and our Rising Tide Members.
